15/03/2010 Opposition unites against Nuclear Liabilities Bill
The crucial Nuclear Liabilities Bill is all set to be tabled in Parliament on Monday amidst opposition from the scientists and environmentalists. "When the Prime Minister said we are now on the same dining table as the nuclear powers, he forgot to mention we were being invited not to dine but as the butlers to serve them," said an angry PK Iyengar, who is the former Atomic Energy Commission chairman. The award of damages will be determined by a Commission for Nuclear Liability. What worries scientists and environment activists is that the total liability will be limited to $468 million.   ibnlive.in.com/news/opposition-unites-against-nuclear-liabilities-bill/111514-3.html

15/03/2010 Gujarat ATS nabs Hizbul terror suspect
The Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Sunday claimed to have arrested a Hizbul Mujahideen operative, Bashir Ahmad Baba, 32, a resident of Srinagar who was allegedly in Gujarat to set up a local network for recruiting youths for terror training. Baba, also known as the “Pepsi Bomber”, was arrested from Anand late on Saturday night. “He came to Ahmedabad with some associates last month on the pretext of holding training sessions to run medical camps. He later sent his associates to other parts of Gujarat while he stayed on in Ahmedabad. He would often visit Anand to meet one of his contacts there, to set up a base and develop a wide network for Hizbul Mujahideen. He would call local boys to the camps and pick recruits for terror training in PoK,” said ATS chief Ajay Tomar. Asked if Baba had actually managed to send any recruits from Gujarat so far, Tomar said the ATS had reason to suspect so, but it could only be confirmed after further investigations.   www.expressindia.com/latest-news/Gujarat-ATS-nabs-Hizbul-terror-suspect/590880/

15/03/2010 Sonia effect: 12 yrs that changed Congress & Indian politics
Congress headquarters on Sunday wore a deserted look. With government establishments closed and almost all office-bearers enjoying the weekend or out in the "field", the crowd of party workers and favour-seekers who throng 24, Akbar Road were missing. For Congress members, though, it was no ordinary day. It was exactly 12 years ago that Sonia Gandhi was appointed party chief, in a development that stemmed Congress’s downward slide, helped it recapture the Dilli Durbar after nearly a decade-long power drought and put the party on the road to re-capturing the pre-eminence it seemed to have lost. Twelve years, to paraphrase former British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, may be a long time in politics, but few would have imagined the turnaround in the party’s fortunes Sonia has scripted since the day when members of Congress Working Committee, deeply worried about the existential crisis facing the party, turned against the incumbent Sitaram Kesri to hand over the organisational reins to her.   timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Sonia-effect-12-yrs-that-changed-Congress-Indian-politics/articleshow/5683890.cms

15/03/2010 India open to new round of talks with Pakistan
India signalled on Friday it was open to a new round of talks with Pakistan, raising fresh hopes of a thaw in relations after last month’s official dialogue between the nuclear-armed rivals produced no breakthrough. The two nations’ top diplomats -- their foreign secretaries -- met in New Delhi for their first official talks since the 2008 Mumbai attacks, but just agreed to "keep in touch" without mentioning if there would be another round of talks. What followed the meeting was a bout of acrimonious exchanges between the two sides over what the focus of the dialogue was -- India on terrorism, Pakistan on the disputed region of Kashmir -- worsening the atmosphere for any future talks. "We tried to make a beginning with the foreign secretary talks, but nothing came out of it am afraid," India’s Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram told a conference in New Delhi.   ibnlive.in.com/news/india-open-to-new-round-of-talks-with-pakistan/111490-3.html

ATS chief K P Raghuvanshi claimed that “the two were working on three targets — ONGC tanks in Bandra, Mangaldas Market in South Mumbai and Thakkar Mall at Borivali”. Their targets and instructions were allegedly given via phone by handlers believed to be based in Pakistan, one of whom was using the alias “Uncle”.   Riyaz was employed at an apparel store in Thakkar Mall. Latif sold television covers and plastic merchandise at Manish Market, not far from Mangaldas Market.   www.indianexpress.com/news/two-held-for-plotting-terror-strikes-in-mumbai/590886/
